It’s snow joke! Using the weather in PR

So the UK is suffering from the effects of too much snow: black ice, gridlock, school closures, overstretched networks etc, etc.

Brits love weather related news. I put snow into Factiva today and looked through the first page's results. Here are some of the mentions of companies, products or services that have got news coverage because of the snow:

The Scotsman – BAA Scotland (once runway was cleared, flights working) and 'Carol Vorderman, the former Countdown maths supremo now working with the Conservatives to improve numeracy, claimed enough snow fell in Britain yesterday for everyone in the country to make a quarter of a million snowballs each.'

The Guardian – Howtodothings.com tells you how to make a perfect snowball. The Mirror – The AA received 16,000 pleas from motorists requiring assistance. And Highways Agency chiefs said there had been so many crashes it was "too many to put a number on".

Daily Mail – The Federation of Small Businesses said the cost of the bad weather to the UK economy was £1.2billion for a single day…….Northern Gas Networks, which owns the pipeline, said fan heaters would be sent to the most vulnerable people.

Financial Times – One contractor at Barclays said: "The atmosphere around Canary Wharf was really good – people were pleased to have something other than the credit crunch to talk about."

Daily Mirror Ireland – Employment law firm Peninsula Ireland warned even more will not be able to make it to their jobs today as large parts of the country are covered with a 10cm blanket of snow.

I know there are more stories out there, but my favourite so far is the how to make a snowball – great PR!!!
